Shurgard, South Ruislip

A fitting new entry to the top 10 landmarks of Ruislip. Situated in what was Booker Cash and Carry in South Ruislip (well most of it, the other bit was knocked down) this lighthouse was built in 2002.

Most, if not all, branches of Shurgard have a lighthouse so it is by no means unique within the scheme of things, but I think it is Ruislip's only folly, a long time coming but well worth the wait, for it is a fine one.

Or is it Ruislip's only folly? Does it have another one? The super-loo in Ruislip High Street.

The super loo was put up by the council adjacent to churchyard in the High Street amid local protests. It was erected at a time when the councils did not need planning permission to build things itself on its own land. So they just railroaded it through. Then somebody said that this rule was incorrect and councils should apply for such planning permission, and retrospectively for items already built. So the council applied to itself for retrospective planning permission for the loo it put up and it turned itself down! Oh how we laughed at the absurdity of it all.

I am not sure if the loo has ever worked, though it is still there (picture and update follows).
