Read a personal message from the Ruislip Online webmaster about joining the mailing list.

Joining my mailing list could not be easier! Just send me an e-mail (see below) saying you wish to be on it, you can come off at any time using the same system!

Your address will NOT be passed on to any third parties and the list is maintained on my PC, not some third party site. Expect a mailing about once each month..

Worried? See FAQ's

Some comments....

"Thanks for the web newsletter. When I re-registered, I was apprehensive re. news letters, but I was pleasantly surprised with content....."

I am pleasantly surprised by this nice meaty bit of information.

I enjoyed this one.

Thank you for that email - I really enjoyed "cycling" around Ruislip with you.....

....thanks for the email (top mail as always).

And one person even wrote

If this is the sort of email I'll get, PLEASE REMOVE ME FROM THIS

MAILING LIST.

So I did, without being asked again - but hey, you can't please all of the people all of the time!

So join the list today, all you need to do is send me an e-mail

Please click on the link that best sums up your present circumstances in order that you can be put on the most appropriate list (this helps both of us!).

See important note below

Please read this important note if you join/are joining, concerning any SPAM filter you may have.

I live in Ruislip (or environs), or am a regular visitor to the area

I used to live in Ruislip, but don't visit there now (or I just love this site!)

The lists are split to keep down "inappropriate" mailings. By example suppose I hear of car clamping going on locally, there is no point it writing to warn those living in the USA of this! Or conversely if I hear of a special offer being made by a hotel in the area then there is no point in writing to those that live locally!

A message from the web master about the Ruislip Online mailing list.

First of all thank you for coming to this page and even considering joining the Ruislip Online mailing list. Ruislip Online has been under my ownership now for around 8 years (in 2007). The site has grown and grown compared to what it was, but I have tried to keep it a community web site for Ruislip, and there is very little on it about areas away from Ruislip (apart from some adverts which are paid for).

(I have read enough and want to join)

As far as I am concerned it is the community part of the site that is the most important aspect to it. But equally I am realistic about the traffic that I get! I recognise that I have a few regulars that exchange messages on the notice board, several "lurkers" who read the messages on a regular basis but never post anything and lots of "casuals", people who may have to look up something on Ruislip, or who live here, or have lived here. It is the latter group that I am seeking to gain the attention of by this missive!

(I have read enough and want to join)

I know that my Internet surfing takes me to certain web sites on a regular basis and others maybe only once or twice. I recognise that a number of people may well drop in to the Ruislip Online web site only once or twice and then, having had a look around muttered something like "Very interesting, I will remember that is there in case I need any information about....." and go, never to return again. If those people came back again having "been away" for a year they would see a very different site, with lots of new sections added, sections that may well interest them.

(I have read enough and want to join)

It is with the above in mind I would ask each and every visitor to this site who has ANY connection with Ruislip to join the mailing list. Now I could well imagine that you might want to ask a question at this stage - so I have dreamt up a few "FAQ's":-

(I have read enough and want to join)

FAQ's

What is in it for me to join this mailing list?

You will be kept abreast of Ruislip Online updates, or of any interesting "goings on" on the web site. Also any interesting "goings on" in Ruislip itself......In a nutshell this means that you will not have to keep dropping in to the site to see if there are any new sections, as you will be advised when they happen. Furthermore, you should not miss any new sections, and there is now so much on the site some areas can be hard to find!

What is in it for Ruislip Online for me to be on the mailing list?

By having more people on the mailing list it is hoped that more traffic will come to the site. The more people who visit the site, and see the new sections, the more hits the site will get and, who knows, the more advertising I can sell!

I hear about mailing lists being sold or passed over to third parties.........

Oh I wish! Mailing lists that are sold consist of millions of addresses, the Ruislip Online mailing list is, at present, well on its way to having one million addresses on it, it is in fact around one/four thousand four hundred and fortieth, of the way there! (As at 2004, about 225 in number in case you can't work it out!).

I worry about getting loads of SPAM

So do I! I can't pretend that e-mails may at some point not mention is some small way people who advertise on this web site. Generally this is by way of a PS. However, Ruislip Online will not be offering you any young ladies (only old available) or drugs to make you feel 18 again (more like 81).

Can I have an example of a recent message?

Just for a bit of fun I have put a little teaser on the front page of the Ruislip Online web site.

Nobody seems to be able to answer the question, why don't you have a go?

Link that was on e-mail

Regards

Viruses....?

No thanks. Ruislip Online has full virus protection, a firewall. Furthermore as an e-mail programme I use Eudora, so if a virus gets past that lot it will stop at the e-mail programme, as it will never have heard of it, so once in my PC can't get out.

Can I come off your e-mail list?

Anytime, just tell me the address I write to.

I live in the USA, I don't need to know about road works in Shenley Avenue (etc...)

The list is split in to two groups, local and distant.

OK, I am convinced, how do I join???

Just click here and follow the instructions.....and thanks!

Your SPAM filter (if you have one)- This is important!

If you have any form of SPAM filtering on your PC or mail server you may well never get mailing from Ruislip Online. Why? Well in order to keep the mailing list confidential when circular letters are sent to all those on the list they are done using a "Blind Carbon Copy" (BCC) facility. This means that you get the message "recipient list suppressed" appearing on your copy of the e-mail, rather than a whole string of e-mail addresses of those that are on the list.

Just about ALL SPAM filters regard any message sent in this manner as SPAM, and lets face facts, and awful lot are! In order to get your messages from Ruislip Online you will have to tell your SPAM filter to ACCEPT messages from info@ruislip.co.uk

To make life even more interesting I acknowledge personally every message that comes in, so you get a message saying "welcome to the mailing list, thank you". This is done as a "one to one" message so you get it and think all is well and then.... if your SPAM filter does its job, never get a message from me again! Back to sign up.
